Vogue Italia: The China Issue June 2015

Ian Thompson | 21 July 2015 |

For the first time in decades, Vogue Italia has chosen a new photographer for the cover of their June 2015 issue celebrating China.

The cover, graced by Fei Fei Sun and styled by Katy England was photographed by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott, ending decades long dominance by Steven Meisel who captured every cover since July / August 1988. Inside the magazine, Bonaveri has contributed their own interpretation of China with an advert that draws inspiration from Asian art.

For many years, Bonaveri has focused attention on the growing interest in the Chinese fashion industry. The Vogue edition reinforces our belief that emerging new young talent is rapidly being created at a time when economic and creative interest in China is maturing. From our showrooms in Hong Kong and Shenzhen and our production facility just outside the City, Bonaveri has been witness to an expanding market that is now being celebrated by European and American publications and institutions.

Vogue Italia’s China Issue illustrates this maturing industry and highlights the interest that fashion brands have for the growing market. The interest goes further than pure economic opportunity as brands reinvent the Asian aesthetic for upcoming seasons collections. China has been a source of fashion and art inspiration for centuries – recent Spring Summer 16 Menswear shows by Gucci and Louis Vuitton both draw inspiration from Asia, using silks, motifs, colours and symbols for their respective collections. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York also focuses on China with it’s celebrated and successful exhibition, China Through the Looking Glass.

Vogue Italia’s decision to publish the China Issue coincides with Italy’s international celebration at Expo Milano 2015. China has, for the first time, participated with its own self-built pavilion that places an emphasis on Chinese efforts to rebalance and minimise man’s impact on the environment. Our own full page advert in Vogue Italia’s June issue celebrates China and their environmental efforts by drawing inspiration from ancient monochromatic Chinese landscape illustration.

Bonaveri continues to support the fashion industry in China through our distributors located in Hong Kong and Shenzhen. The production facility in China faithfully manufactures the Bonaveri and Schläppi collections for Chinese based businesses and fashion labels.

Asian regional interest in Bonaveri has spread so far beyond the traditional commercial borders of Hong Kong and Shenzhen that we that we have decided to open a new showroom in Shanghai. Located in the elegant and green French Concession area of Shanghai, the new showroom is planned for opening in late 2015. We’ll be releasing more information about the showroom soon.

The China Issue from Vogue Italia is now available.
